GROOVING IN HAWAII

WISH YOU WERE HERE...

(not really...)

BOOMING BASSLINES

summer madness

Play this one as your very last song in the dance, and watch the people pair up for sex. Something about Sean Paul's middle class voice and the pimpy sounds of "Summer Madness" really opens everybody up-Unfortunately the only mention of the Bell brothers' landmark slowjam is in the title of the version-

You might not deserve it, but the version is included, along with the instrumental of "Between The Sheets". Get out there and get laid!

AFRICAN VERSION

Burning hot B side, done by the deadly and under-rated Karl Pitterson.
Peter namechecks four of the boroughs (sorry Shaolin) for the first time on Jamaican wax!

night life lady

Such a shame to see our little sisters going down the drain-
How many of you have watched the night life destroy a very decent girl?

10,000 HITS

10,000 HITS ON THIS BLOG AND MAYBE 90 COMMENTS? That's okay, the reason for the blog is self-expression and spreading knowledge. Bloggers who live for a big pat on the back are kidding themselves. When they go private "because nobody cares", what did they expect? This is a fun thing, nothing but a show & tell game for grown ups.

Hopefully this music will fill the gaps in people's collections, and they will spread the word by putting the songs in their DJ sets in clubs and on radio. The clowns who horde music in pristine collections, never playing the records or even really enjoying them, are really missing the point.

Get out there and live your life you fools!!

booty butt 45 on tangerine

One of Ray's rawest blues, done at his house and self-engineered.
Is that Fathead thumping the keys on his sax percussively?
The black label is a Jamaican pressing I found that was supposedly "LICENSED" from ABC: kind of like the way you see "adapted" or "adopted" for songwriting credits sometimes...

puss see hole

Some of Perry's most brilliant poetry, a simple dog and cat story:

"Dog go a market,
Puss go a market.
Dog see hole,
Puss see hole."

bought this one in 1980 at Roughtrade in SF, drinking a Guinness in the shop-

MISTER COP

Nice times at the Black Ark, with Greg, Scratch, The Heptones and whoever The Upsetters were that day (is that Mikey Boo on drums?) grooving hard in Scratch’s little garage. This particular pressing appeared on the Micron imprint in Jamaica.
Many of you have never heard the dubwise cut: this version has a special splice to ensure prolonged, extended Upsetter bliss.*.*.*.*

HAPPY FOURTH

History is a terrible and ugly story. Of course the world also holds intense beauty and passion. The Yanks brought you jazz: African vibes mixed with European instruments and discipline- Slowly but surely, jazz and blues mutated into thousands of rock and roll artforms as diverse as Swamp Pop and Dubstep.

Hated but emulated worldwide, these “colonial twits” of the 50 states have given the world Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, bluejeans, Martin Scorcese, cheeseburgers, the Chevrolet Impala, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Carter, Stax Records and peanut butter. Go ahead and laugh, you know where the funk originated: even Bob Marley would have told you that-

Some say this is Scratch's best lyric:
From a Dutch disco on Black Art-
