the view

Okay okay, enough JR stuff right? Judging by how you guys are stampeding to download the previous JR cuts, you like Junior Reid quite a bit. This lyric uses a joke about "having a view" in Mountainview and Harbourview in Jamaica. Most of you will miss the reference.

Many are complaining about Badongo being used as the link, but this hasn't stopped lots of you from taking the music. Play these loud in the dance, and if you like them say hello in the cbox.

year of the chalice

At some point dancehall heads noticed that Junior Reid had found a cheaper way to press his own productions. The actual vinyl was of sketchy quality, and had a cloudy look to it. The labels, with their gaudy logo and odd coloring, were printed in bulk and hand-titled with a rubber stamp. This sleeve was used as a test sheet to get the ink pad "just right".

"No Loafting" is JR's treatment of "Skylarking", and "Year Of The Chalice" uses the Kuchie riddim.

SEPT. 11

Baby Huey AKA James Ramey was part of the Curtom roster and ended up doing two spinoff tracks based on the Impressions' "mighty mighty spade and whitey", a hit on it's own already. Here are three pieces, each with their own subtleties- Anyone have the instrumental?

TAXI GANG

We linked with Taxi Gang again in our town this weekend- Sly, Robbie, Nambo and the crew brought a heavy set of riddims to the stage, and spread nuff good-natured vibes around the place off-stage too.

You probably already have these two pieces of “Moving Away” by Ken Boothe, also known as the M16 riddim.

MORE LOVE!

respect to STEELY (2)

Gary Minott insists that the music business is "kinda rotten" and that artists aren't really composing at all! The riddim is Steely & Clevie's digital lick of "Please Be True (Searching)".

respect to STEELY

Wycliffe “STEELY” Johnson is gone. Steely was keyboardist for the Roots Radics and did sessions for every foundation Jamaican producer. As part of Steely & Clevie with Cleveland Browne, he contributed countless classics to the dance hall as producer, writer and keyboardist. R.I.P. STEELY!

Here is “sweet for my sweet”, a digital steppers 45 on which The Cat drops Steely’s name many many many times in the lyric- For kicks the version is included, along with a Tego spinoff on the same riddim by Derrick Parker.
